Gil
Short knows horseracing inside and out. From the drawing board
to the backside, Short has been involved in every aspect of
horseracing. He has consulted on the design, construction, and
maintenance of horseracing and training facilities for over 35
years, inspired by his hands-on experience as a horse owner and
trainer.
Short designed, managed and owned
Spring Garden Ranch in Florida.
The $2 million renovation project included construction of a
one-mile track, 400 stalls, recreation area, and track kitchen. As
the owner, Short built a profitable training track with a nationally
respected reputation.
Short was also involved in developing, finalizing, and executing the
design of the $16 million
Trinity Meadows Raceway in Fort Worth,
Texas. The development included finalization of the backside
infrastructure, reconstruction of the existing racing surface, and
addition of a maintenance building. As General Manager and Director
of Operations, Short designed and produced a mixed-media marketing
program, and established effective inventory control in all areas of
the racetrack. He developed an innovative maintenance program that
reduced costs by 25 percent.

Gil Short designed, developed and supervised construction of
Virginia’s first pari-mutuel racetrack,
Colonial Downs, including
four satellite-wagering facilities. The track itself featured
Harness racing’s only one-turn mile and Thoroughbred racing’s widest
turf course in North America. As Vice President, he employed and
supervised all departments to ensure maximum performance of the $62
million facility.
Short’s most recent success was the design and development of
Indiana Downs located in Shelbyville, Indiana. He was also
responsible for supervising the construction of this outstanding $35
million facility. In addition, Short designed, developed and
constructed two off-track betting facilities in Evansville and
Clarksville both located in Indiana.
Throughout his career in racetrack management and design, Short has
owned and trained numerous racehorses, including five World
Champions, one of which Stienam, retired as the richest filly in the
sport of Harness racing. With years of experience and knowledge,
Short has a proven track record as one of the finest racetrack
consultants in the nation.
